Discover Twentynine Palms: Gateway to Mojave Desert Adventures
Recently, during my tour of the Mojave Desert in Southern California, I was captivated by natural landscape of this mysterious desert. With its open vistas of rugged wilderness that gives you the privilege, to experience total freedom of space when camping or hiking. An awesome Mojave desert adventure.

I am an adventurous traveler, one that loves exploring the mystery of a place, and discovering the hidden treasures of a destination. During my travel to the Mojave Desert, I stumbled upon a rural desert city called Twentynine Palms near Joshua Tree National Park .
Twentynine Palms is a natural wonderland of desert wilderness, and rich in cultural history, which is vividly captured inh historical murals displayed throughout the city.
Explore the Mojave Trails National Monument
In 2016, the federal government designated Mojave Trails as a National Monument. The city, I learned, is not only the host of the popular historical headquarters of Joshua Tree National Park, but is also an official gateway community into the Mojave Trails National Monument. To my delight it’s a short drive of about 49 minutes, north of Hwy 62 via Amboy Road.
A key feature that I noted of the Mojave Trails National Monument is that it connects the Mojave National Preserve with Joshua Tree National Park. This ensures the biological connectivity of this landscape, while preserving traditional uses, such as hunting and off-highway vehicle recreation.
Drive Historic Route 66 Through the Mojave Desert
Route 66 is one of the Mojave Desert’s great historical treasures. The monument is home to the longest remaining undeveloped stretch of the original historic highway. Traveling Route 66 takes you back to another time. Along the way, you’ll discover vintage road signs, iconic neon signs, historic highway motels, restaurants, and classic motor courts.
In Barstow, California, colorful street murals depict and celebrate the history of iconic Route 66. Travel farther along the highway and you’ll discover historic mining and ghost towns such as Calico and Amboy. Each offers another glimpse into Southern California’s desert past.
Route 66 became popularly known as the “Mother Road.” Generations of Americans traveled this legendary highway on their journeys west and on vacations to California. The road once connected communities across the country and carried travelers across the Rocky Mountain divide toward the Pacific Ocean. For many Americans, it also represented migration, opportunity, adventure, and the promise of somewhere new.
That history is part of what gives Route 66 its enduring spirit. The highway represents the resilience of generations of American travelers and continues to evoke a powerful sense of freedom and discovery.
The romance and nostalgia of Route 66 also live on in American popular culture. Movies, music, roadside architecture, and television helped transform the highway into an American icon. Bobby Troup’s famous 1946 song, “(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66,” and the 1960s television series Route 66 helped immortalize the legendary highway and the freedom of the open road.
Visit Amboy Crater
For travelers seeking memorable Mojave Desert adventures, Amboy Crater offers a fascinating opportunity to explore the region’s volcanic landscape and geological history.
The extraordinary discovery for me on this tour was this national natural landmark, Amboy Crater. An adventure’s treat, a volcanic cinder cone in the middle of the Mojave Desert that resembles a lonely isolated mountain. Located 1.5 miles south of Route 66, and 55 minutes from the City of Twentynine Palms.
Amboy Crater rises approximately 250 feet above the surrounding desert and measures about 1,500 feet across. Volcanic ash and cinders created this remarkable geological landmark thousands of years ago.
Today, the crater stands dramatically against the vast Mojave Desert landscape and offers visitors an opportunity to explore the area’s volcanic history.
Situated on one of the youngest volcanic fields in the United States, the volcano was last documented as erupting 10,000 years ago. Amboy Crater is truly a geological wonder.
Hike Amboy Crater
You can hike the trail on the west of the cinder cone. The trail will take you to an opening where it seems that at one time a violent volcanic eruption ruptured the crater wall.
Inside the crater, hikers can discover fascinating volcanic features, including ancient lava formations and remnants of past volcanic activity. Continue toward the rim for expansive views across the surrounding Mojave Desert.
The hike can be challenging, especially during warmer weather. I recommend visiting in spring or fall when desert temperatures are generally cooler.
as If you hike the trail and make it up to the 1,508 foot tall center rim, you will be rewarded with an awesome view that reveals an epic desert landscape.

Experience the Mojave National Preserve
My partner, being the romantic he is, planned the last part of the tour towards the end of the day so that I would experience the bold, brilliant, colors of the sun setting in the Mojave Desert.
Discover the Kelso Dunes
As the evening progressed into the night, to my delight, I was taken to the exotic Kelso Dunes, located in the Mojave National Preserve.The night was lit up by the bright, sultry full moon. The light of the moon guided us in our hike to the top of the dunes.
Once at the top you will experience panoramic views of the surrounding dunes and peaks. A picture perfect sea of sand that awakens all your senses. As we lay on the sand, we could feel the stillness of the night, the cool grains of the sand on our feet. The refreshing cool breeze of early fall silently fanning us.
The Kelso Dunes have an energy of peace and tranquility that awakened my soul to experience the harmony of natures wonderland.
Kelso Dunes are also famous for an unusual natural phenomenon known as “singing” or “booming” dunes. As sand moves down the dunes, the shifting grains can produce a deep booming or vibrating sound. This unusual phenomenon makes Kelso Dunes one of the Mojave Desert’s most intriguing natural attractions, noted by, (www.nps.gov).

Wind continuously reshapes the Kelso Dunes, so hikers will not find a permanent trail to the summit. Desert roads and remote conditions also require advance planning. Research your route, weather conditions and current National Park Service guidance before beginning your trip.
